It is important to remember that there is no such thing as easy money. In reality, you need to remember the age old adage; you need to “speculate to accumulate”. You will not make a profit by luck alone; it takes work, whether that is built on risk or actual labour. If you are just starting out, don’t just jump right in. Learn your trade. Bet small and assess your results. Betting with real money is very different from doing it as a paper exercise. Bear in mind that unexpected market swings can take you out of the game. Today the choice of products available for spread betting is enormous enabling you to take a position in the share price of major companies across the globe, particularly in the UK, US and Europe, commodities, currencies and even interest rates. Commodities spread betting allows you to take positions on precious metals and other sectors such as oil, gas or media. There are even opportunities to venture into mixing topical bets with the real markets, something which proved surprisingly popular during Euro 2004 and more recently during elections where for instance people bet on the performance of the FTSE index. Never forget however, there is always a risk, don’t gamble with money you cannot afford to lose.
