Depending upon how seriously you are taking spread betting will depend on whether or not you need to formulate a strategy.  If you are just betting once or twice on the markets there is probably no need to have a strategy.

However, if you are planning on making a career out of spread betting it is advisable to think strategically.
Most spread betting is done through predicting how market trends are likely to change for a particular product or company.  You are betting against whether the shares are going to go up or down on the market.

The trading indices are the most reliable strategy when considering spread betting on the future of the markets. However, it can give you a clear indication about how the market is moving as a whole rather than looking at each individual product.

If you have formulated a strategy for your spread betting this makes it easier to stay within your betting limitations and budget.  It can ensure that you do not lose a significant amount of money in a short space of time or invest in something that is not going to get your any return.
