It’s not all bad news for some companies it seems; supermarket chain Morrisons has reported a 7% increase in profits, adding that their short and long term outlook for the future is a positive one.

"'This was another year of good progress for Morrisons as we continued to grow sales, profits and dividends, whilst also investing to generate future growth," said chairman Sir Ian Gibson.

Christmas sales were unexpectedly good considering the way the economy was heading and their ‘Value’ range was also up 50% over the last 12 months.

The recent events leading upto and including Red Nose Day have surely entered into everyone’s minds at some point over the last couple of weeks. Supermarket Sweep

Waitrose has recently announced it’s launch of a ‘budget range’. Now this can be seen as one of two things; either they are in trouble as a company and need to critically re-think their future before something fatal occurs, or they are extremely successful at this present time and can afford to produce this kind of offer for customers who are finding times hard during the recession.

If the latter is to be believed then Waitrose may be a good company to invest some money into at the moment. The credit crunch is affecting most people but those who are at the higher end of the tax payers band will feel it somewhat less than a lower rate tax payer. It is well documented that Waitrose is for the ‘more affluent’ shopper but of course, this does not mean that everything remains affordable.

Rough estimates

Some figures were released this week which have given some potentially good indications where spread betting is concerned. For example, Ireland’s top central banker has predicted that there will be a fall of 6% in the Irish Republic economy, therefore a spread better could easily pick up a wager for a higher or lower amount than the 6% stated.

John Hurley the Governor of Ireland’s central bank has announced that unemployment will average about 11% - another figure to work with as far as spread betting is concerned.  If these figures climb higher than the 11% assured and you have wagered this will happen, you win!

Cuts at ITV

Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:31

In a world where the internet is creeping further and further into our living rooms, it has now encroached upon our TV screens and is a contributory element with regards to job cuts at ITV.  Announcements were made this week that 600 jobs and other significant savings were to be made across ITV’s business.

Following recent reports of a £2.7bn loss for 2008, many of its troubles have surrounded a dramatic decrease in advertising revenue.  A further blow has meant that ITV also have plans to sell Friends United, a once leading social networking site and Scoot, an online business directory. In some regions, including Leeds, complete studio closures will mean that certain programmes will be at risk.

For the first time since October 1997, the worldwide stock markets have fallen with alarming and dire consequences, reinforcing fears that the downturn in the current economic markets is far from over and showing no signs of improvement.

AIG Insurance have been in the news headlines recently as concerns arise with regards to what will happen in the long term. Many financial experts fear that this recent ‘bail out’ of $150bn is far wide of the mark in terms of economic recovery and being America’s largest insurance company, this is very worrying to say the least.
